Thinking About a Career Change? You Don't Have to Know the Whole Plan Yet

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us picked up the idea that a career change requires a complete plan. Know the destination. Have the timeline. Be certain before you move.

That's a lot of pressure to put on a decision you haven't made yet.

If you're feeling stuck in your current role (not necessarily miserable, but not quite right either), you might be waiting for a moment of clarity that never quite arrives. Waiting to feel sure. Waiting to know exactly what comes next before you allow yourself to take a single step.

Here's what I've noticed working with clients on career transitions: clarity rarely comes from thinking harder. It tends to come from doing something small and paying attention to how it feels.

That's the idea behind treating your career like a series of experiments rather than a series of irreversible decisions.

An experiment might look like having a conversation with someone in a field you're curious about. Or taking on a small project that uses a skill you've been wanting to develop. Or simply noticing what parts of your current work feel energizing versus draining.

None of those things require you to quit your job, commit to a new path, or have it all figured out. They just give you information.

The fear of making the wrong career decision is real. But waiting for certainty before experimenting is a little like waiting to feel confident before you try something new. The confidence usually comes after, not before.

You don't have to know where you're going to start learning something useful about the direction.

If you're at that point where you know something needs to change but you're not sure what, that's actually a reasonable place to start. Career coaching can help you think through what you're noticing and figure out what small next steps might make sense for you.

You don't need the whole plan. You just need the next experiment.
